Killary Fjord is located in one of the most scenic parts of Ireland, it is considered Ireland’s only true fjord and extends 16km (10 miles) in from the Atlantic to its head at Aasleagh. It forms the border between Galway and Mayo and boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in the west of Ireland. To the north of the Killary Fjord lies Mweelrea, the highest mountains in Connacht and to the south are the Twelve Bens and the Maumturk Mountains of Connemara. Majestic views greet the visitor from all directionsKillary Harbour is 45 metres deep at its centre, because of the depth and the mountains to the south and north it is an ideal location for mussel farming At Killary Fjord Shellfish we farm blue-shell mussels also known as the common mussel on ropes attached to long-lines submerged 8 meters under water.
Killary is an ideal location for growing mussels thanks to the unique combination of fresh and sea water which gives the Killary mussel a distinctive sweet flavour. It is here on the Fjord that we grow, harvest, depurate and debysse mussels in our dispatch centre for local restaurants and wholesalers on the WAW. Simon and family live on the fjord flanking the mussel farm and it is this proximity to the farm that makes their mussels clearly the finest mussels available locally.
